Google Daydream vs. Oculus Rift: Which VR Headset Should You Buy?

While the Google Daydream is a new entrant in the virtual reality headset space, Oculus Rift is the pioneer of VR. Understanding features like the controls, core processing, resolution, weight, audio, GPU, RAM; we’d be able to make the choice.

RESOLUTION:

With the Google Daydream you can enjoy a resolution of 1,440 x 1,280 per eye on the Pixel XL and 1,080 x 960 per eye on the Pixel.

The Oculus Rift sports offers an OLED display with 1,080 x 1,200 per eye pixel resolution.

COMPATABILITY:

The Google daydream is currently compatible only with the Google Pixel & Pixel XL.

The Oculus Rift is currently compatible with certain PCs thus allowing you to experience PC gaming on it.

WEGHT & COLOUR:

The Google Daydream weighs 220 gms without the phone. The Pixel XL weighs 168 g; with a combined weight of 388 grams. It comes in 3 colour variants: slate, snow & crimson.

The Rift weighs 1.03 pounds, or about 467 grams and is currently available only in black.

FIELD OF VIEW & AUDIO:

With a field of view of approximately 90 degrees, the Google daydream comes with an integrated speaker and headphone jack. While the Oculus Rift has a field of view of approximately 100 to 110 degrees and inbuilt headphones with 3D audio effect, positional and rotational tracking.

COST:

The Google Daydream costs $79 which seems extremely less but the user will have to invest in a Pixel or Pixel XL which will cost them another $649. The Oculus Rift is priced at $599 which includes a headset, sensor, remote, cables, Xbox One controller & Lucky’s Tale. Customers may have to invest in a PC that is compatible with the device.

WHICH IS BETTER?

Having seen the comparison between the features offered by both devices, there are notable differences. Thus based on your need, you can make your selection.

If you wish to experience VR casually, the Google Daydream should be your pick. But if you’re a hard core gamer and wish to experience the best of virtual reality, the better choice is the Oculus Rift.

In case you need to invest in a PC compatible with the Oculus Rift, it will cost either the same or slightly more than the Google Daydream. However, if price is a factor to make your purchase, considering you will purchase the Google Pixel along with the Daydream, the Oculus Rift will cost you almost $130 lesser.
