Are you concerned about letting your child/ teen using your iPhone or iPad? We are sure one of your concerns is keeping them away from unsuitable content that floats freely on the internet. But when you are using an Apple product you need not worry as it features strong parental controls as the company has strong stand against pornography.

We shall guide you through where your child might find unsuitable content on an Apple device as well ways and tools that Apple provides to keep them out of it.

Apple’s app store is carefully designed and planned. Apple as company ensures every app that goes live on the app store does not feature any nudity, not even the Playboy Magazine app. Also against each app you will see age rating displayed. Also it is quite possible your idea of what’s appropriate for your child might not match Apple’s. It will be advisable to review the app. Also Apple’s store for books, movies and television are not so well monitored. Thus it offers a market for adult content on their shelves.

It is the internet that you have to most worry about as both the iPad and the iPhone have access to it. It is an open market for content which is not appropriate for children.

Keep a password on the iPhone or iPad for the iTunes account; ensure that it is not known to your child. It will prevent your child from installing any apps or downloading movies or music. Even if your child does not use the iPad or iPhone do have a strong and secure password for your account.

If your child is going to use the device, then you can lock the device by activating iOS parental controls. To enable it just go to Settings > General > Restrictions and select Enable Restrictions. Once it is activated, you will be again asked to enter a 4- digit password. Make sure it is not the same you use to lock the device. This feature will disable use of number of applications as well as stop your child from accessing music, movies, books etc.

If you are okay with your child having restrained access to the internet, download a child-friendly browser which prevents them from accessing unsuitable content. Mobicip Safe Browser and Ranger Browser Safe Browser both are free on iTunes will ensure safe internet experience for your child.

You can also go for “Guided Access”, if the device is used by you and your child and you have content on the device which is unsuitable for them. Guided access will temporarily lock your iPhone or iPad into a single application. To activate your Guided Access, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access. Once you have activated it, open the app you want to run and click the home button three times to start a Guided Access session. You can select any part of the screen you do not want your child to be able to click on.

With carefully configuring parental controls, you need worry about your child getting into inappropriate content. So take some time to carefully configure parental controls before handing your child any device.
