Netflix Finally Lets You Download & Watch Offline

Following Amazon’s move and consistent requests from subscribers, the online streaming service Netflix has finally made it possible to download shows and movies.

The service now offers the ability to view content offline through both the Android and iOS app.

So now, iPad, iPhone and Android phone users can continue watching their show even when travelling in areas with little or no network connection.

While Amazon has been offering downloadable content in this manner for a while now, the collection that Amazon has is limited. Thankfully, Netflix has a much larger library of videos that you can download from and the company has even promised that it will be adding more very soon!

The current array of TV shows available on Netflix for download includes The Crown, Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, Narcos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad and many more. There are also movies like Minions, Paddington, Kung Fu Panda 3, Pulp Fiction, Boyhood, Good Will Hunting, Nightcrawler, Hot Fuzz, etc.

The latest update for Netflix is available through the Google Play Store or the App Store. Apple users will need to download the Netflix version 9.0.1, while Android users must have Netflix version 4.12.0.

Once you have installed the update, you will notice that each video will now feature a button for downloading, right beside the play button. Clicking on this allows you to save videos so that you can watch them later.

To help you conserve your internet data, Netflix offers an option to download content at a lower resolution called ‘Standard’. If you are around a Wi-Fi network or strong internet connection, you can simply opt for the ‘Higher’ resolution, which offers better video quality and of course bigger file size. This resolution also takes longer to download compared to the ‘Standard’ quality. Unfortunately Netflix has not specified what resolution the two quality tags actually refer to.

While the Amazon Video streaming service allows a user to download only two videos at a time, as of now, Netflix has not put any restriction on how many videos a user can download to watch offline. So if you wish, you can even download an entire season at a time and watch it when you are travelling.

Another cool feature is that once you have selected a particular video, you can even choose to download it to your Android device’s microSD card.
