Common shortcuts

Launch Start menu

On Windows 7 and 10, WIN key will launch the Start menu and will permit you to start typing a search immediately. It is much faster than using your mouse and typing your search.

Cut, Copy, and Paste

First highlight the text, then simultaneously press CTRL+X, it will remove it and place it on the clipboard. Pressing CTRL+V will paste the text on the clipboard. CTRL+C will copy the text and again CTRL+V will paste the text. This shortcut function will be applicable for images as well.

Select All

CTRL+A will help you select everything –text, images and formatting. It works well when you are working on multiple files at once. It helps you to capture everything you have typed at once and re-use it somewhere else. Using a mouse is too slow.

Save, Open and Print Files

To save a file you are working on use CTRL+S, it is very quick. Do it often to save work. It will save a web browser page as well for offline viewing. If you want to open a file press CTRL+O.
Yes we do want to save paper and are aiming for a paperless work. But even today there is some work which involves paper. CTRL+P will help you print your work.

Close Window and Tabs

To close a Window, all you need to do is use ALT+F4, it is far quicker than clicking on the X in the top-right corner. Using CTRL+F4 will help you close just the current Tab. Using CTRL+W will also allow you to close your Tab.

Show Desktop

To have instant access to your desktop press WIN+D. This is a quick way when you have multiple files and windows open and have to access a file placed on your desktop.

Lock The System

The quickest way to lock your system is by using WIN+L keys. A smart way to secure your system just when you are playing games and your boss happens to be at your work station.

Access System Tools

To launch Windows Tools, which contains functions like the Control Panel, Device Manager, and Programs menu, press WIN+X. You will not find this option on Windows 7, as pressing WIN+X will bring up Windows Mobility Center.

Minimize and Maximize Windows

To minimize all open Windows press WIN+M. When you want to get back to work SHIFT+WIN+M. This is way quicker option than to use your mouse to close individual windows.
