WhatsApp Testing New ‘Status’ Tab
It comes as no surprise that Facebook is constantly updating WhatsApp by adding new features, and the latest thing to look forward to is a ‘Status’ tab. It is also interesting to note that this new feature is believed to be akin to Snapchat, and similar updates have already been released for Facebook Messenger and Instagram (based on the popular ‘Stories’ feature). However, before you rush to check for a WhatsApp update on your smartphone, slow down. You should know that this is currently a ‘hidden’ feature, being under testing – and hence is available only on jailbroken iOS phones or a rooted Android device.
So, what will the ‘Status’ feature do for you?
Remember, there is a feature on WhatsApp currently that is called ‘Status’ as well, however the new release promises to be vastly different. What you can do now is change your status to a one-line update whenever you wish, and what sets the new option apart is the fact that you can now upload photos which can be shared with your contacts for a limited period of time – this is where the similarity to Snapchat and Instagram comes in – and see who all have viewed the stories. And of course, to ensure that you can maintain your privacy the way you’d like, you as the user are free to personalise your privacy settings, essentially allowing you to decide who the audience for your stories is going to be. If you compare this with Snapchat, there too, the logic is similar – you can tell exactly how many of your friends have viewed the stories you’ve put up.
How it works is simple – once you have clicked a picture, you will see a preview that allows you to edit the same, for instance, should you want to add an emoji, text or maybe even just crop it. You also have the option to change the audience once your photo is live.
There have already been features added to WhatsApp in recent times and this is an addition to the list. It will be interesting therefore to see how this development goes (it is currently in beta testing), because Facebook is clearly on its way to woo users over from Snapchat. Of course, the final word will only be delivered once this feature goes live, so until then, just wait and watch!
